We have successfully advocated for our clients before the Refugee Protection Division, Refugee Appeal Division, Immigration Appeal Division and Federal Court of Canada.
We specialize in assisting clients who have received a refusal and can discuss the options available to them.
We can assist on a variety of immigration applications, including study permits, work permits, family sponsorship and refugee sponsorship.
We are DEDICATED
Alemyehu Law was founded by Iyarusalem Alemyehu (she/her), a Calgary-based immigration lawyer who is passionate about justice. Iyarusalem immigrated from a country that does not always uphold the law. This motivated her to become a lawyer and continually work towards just outcomes for her neighbour. It is a blessing for her to do this work.
Iyarusalem holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree with high distinction from the University of Toronto, specializing in Criminology and minoring in Political Science and English.
Iyarusalem obtained her law degree from the Osgoode Hall Law School of York University in Toronto. She was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 2021. Iyarusalem is a member of the Canadian Bar Association.
We are PASSIONATE
Iyarusalem's most memorable professional experience was working in India with a global anti-slavery organization. There, she assisted local lawyers in defending and repatriating women and children who had been trafficked for labour.
While in law school, Iyarusalem got to work in a legal clinic serving women from different backgrounds who had experienced violence, assisting with immigration, family and criminal issues. Iyarusalem also got to work for the organization responsible for regulating lawyers in Alberta, assisting with disciplining unethical practices. Iyarusalem was fortunate to article at a legal clinic in Calgary, advocating for those who do not have access to paid legal services.
Iyarusalem has enjoyed many opportunities to give back to the community, including supporting migrant women in the caregiver industry, lobbying for access to services for marginalized communities, working with and mentoring youth, and advocating for older adults in long-term care.
